A modern interpretation of Lysistrata

LysistrataOld meets new in the 2014 Festival Hellenika celebration of Greek culture when Adapt Enterprises presents a modern interpretation of a classic Greek comedy, featuring live music and a local South Australian cast.

First performed in 411BCE, Lysistrata is arguably Aristophanes’ most popular surviving comedy. It’s an antiwar, feminist piece about the battle between the sexes, revealing that little has changed in about 3000 years.

The Peloponnesian War is in full swing and the women of Greece are fed up with it. Under the direction of an Athenian woman named Lysistrata (which translates to ‘army-dispander’), they decide to execute a sex strike in a bid to secure peace. What follows is a hilarious battle of the sexes, with Lysistrata battling misogyny, social norms, and the libidos of her sexually starved followers, as she attempts to bring peace to the divided cities of Greece.

Directed by Ross Vosvotekas, Lysistrata will run at the Holden Street Theatres in Hindmarsh from 15-31 May and stars Michaela Wauchope, Justin J Stone, Olivia Fairweather, Petra Taylor, Anita Nedosyko, Tanya Gyzi, Mark Milton, Gia Pyrlis, Joseph Moore, Hannah Yates, Chris Roberts, Tom Fitzsimons, Sean Watters, Phi Theodoros and director Ross Vosvotekas.
