Here’s a great story for your Monday – did you know that the Lamington is most likely named after former Governor of Queensland, Lord Lamington? Or to be more precise, Charles Wallace Alexander Napier Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington, who served from 1896 to 1901 and thought the cake attributed to his namesake was in fact a “bloody poofy woolly biscuits”. That’s quite the zinger, Charles.
So how does that tie into the Myer Centre Adelaide’s 25th birthday celebrations? Well, it seems that a request was passed onto Kyton’s Bakery some time recently for a Lamington cake to measure 1.8 x 1.2 metres in size of the number ’25’ to be made in commemoration of the birthday. When most people turn 25, we’re given a $50 bar tab and a ‘time to get a real job’ speech from our parents…
This delicious centre piece will be be found at the Myer Centre’s ground floor entrance from Rundle Mall, where it will be shared amongst the people of Adelaide on Friday 3 June from 10am. It’s all for a good cause, with volunteers collecting gold coin donations in support the Hutt St Centre on the day.
Also, from Friday to Sunday, the Myer Centre will give away $5 food and drink vouchers for use within the centre, and shoppers spending more than $150 can collect a $25 Myer Centre Adelaide gift card from the Service Desk.*
if you like those “bloody poofy woolly biscuits” it sounds like quite the celebration. And regardless, it’s a great opportunity to toast a building that upon it’s completion in 1991, also brought us Dazzleland. Memories!
