A Bloke, A Bike And A Great Cause

A South Aussie bloke grabs his bike to ride from Canberra back home to Adelaide for a very special cause

In October, 62 year old Paul Warneke (a.k.a. Bloke on Bike) of Blair Athol will commence a fund-raising bicycle ride from Canberra to Adelaide, a distance of around 2,000 kilometres, to raise $10,000 for the Animal Welfare League of South Australia and the animals in their care.

While many people his age are looking to take it easy, Paul is definitely not slowing down. Instead he is picking up the pace and reliving a teenage passion for cycling all over the countryside. However, as he says, he has never attempted anything of this magnitude. Previously his longest ride has been a comparatively easy one over three days.

“This ride is going to be a real challenge. Being an unsupported solo ride from Canberra to Adelaide, not only will I need to carry about 30 kilograms of support gear such as food, tent, sleeping bag, tools and bike parts, but every morning I will have to pack it all back onto the mountain bike and ride at least another 90 kilometres. Day after day, rain or shine.”

Paul rides out of Canberra Airport on 4 October, first heading towards Mt Kosciuszko, passing through Jyndabine before descending towards the River Murray itself. From there he will follow its twists and turns, sleeping on its banks at night until he reaches the ocean near Goolwa, South Australia on or before 27 October.

For Paul this journey is both a personal challenge which retraces the route of a teenage family holiday as well as a fund raising event for the Animal Welfare League of South Australia who, every year, care for thousands of lost or abandoned animals.

Being the owner of two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, this is close to Paul’s heart and he is keen to take this opportunity to raise $10,000 of much needed support funds.

Donations can be made to the Animal Welfare League online via www.blokeonbike.com or mailed to the Animal Welfare League SA marked for the “Bloke on Bike’s Fundraiser” at PO Box 1525, Port Adelaide SA 5015.
