6000 People Vying For Spot At Adelaide’s Most Exclusive Picnic

Dîner en Blanc is returning to Adelaide this November, with the exclusive event attracting more interest than ever before.

On Saturday November 25, Dîner en Blanc, the World’s Largest Pop-up Picnic and most sought-after event, returns to Adelaide. We’ve seen this mesmerising sea of white dawn our city yearly, in some of the most iconic locations including Rundle Mall, Victoria Square and the Adelaide Riverbank.

If you’re not familiar, let us clue you in. In it’s first year, there was a list of VIPs invited, who then could nominate one person.

If you want to attend, you’ve got three options: being part of the Hosts or Leaders’ personal network and getting invited by them (Phase 1); by knowing someone who registers during Phase 1 and asking them to sponsor you for Phase 2; or, by signing up to the waiting list and registering during Phase 3 (which is now OPEN!).

Guests are required to dress head-to-toe in white (strictly no ivory, no off-white, and no beige) and bring a square folding-table plus two white chairs; a white picnic basket and/or bag including a gourmet meal for two, a white tablecloth and cloth-napkins, cutlery, dishware, and glassware; and a garbage bag. It’s up to you how all out you go. We’ve seen people bring their own floral arrangements and table centrepieces – just remember, it all has to be (predominantly) white.

The tradition was born in France in 1988, with Frenchman François Pasquier inviting just a handful of friends to dine with him. The Parisian Le Dîner en Blanc now assembles over 10,000 guest every year, and copycat events are sprouting in popularity around the world.

Featuring an abundance of white, the picnic has proven to be a visual masterpiece as much as a social event. A wave of white linen napkins signifies the beginning of dining, and sparklers lighting up the dance floor late into the night.

On the evening, lucky guests will gather at 19 meeting points across the city, before being guided by volunteers to a gorgeous final setting via chartered bus. Hampers from Kitchen and Catering By Sam and Gather and Graze by Bre are available for pre-purchase, so you can skip the meal prep and dig straight in. You can also pre-order your choice of Howard Vineyard wines online here.

Over the course of the evening, guests experience the beauty and value of their city’s public spaces by participating in the unexpected. Beyond the spectacle and elegance of the dinner itself, guests are brought together from diverse backgrounds by good taste and a love of beauty.

Le Dîner en Blanc recalls the elegance and glamor of high French society, and guests engage one another, knowing that they are taking part in a truly magical event. There are no disruptions: no car traffic, no pedestrian traffic—only amazed and astonished looks from passersby observing the dream-like scene before them.
