A Guide To Celebrating The Rio Olympics In Adelaide

Because sitting at home on your own is for watching Seinfeld, not for enjoying the pinnacle of human sporting achievement.

The Opening Ceremony is just days away and we’re still not sure if the toilets are plumbed at the Village. Or if the mosquitos carry Zika. Or if any Russian athletes have made it into the country. Will anyone turn up to watch? Oh the suspense!

Quite seriously though, how good is it to have the celebration of the pinnacle of human sporting achievement back to provide a one of a kind Quadrennial cultural melting pot? It’s your chance to sit back and watch the canoe slalom, the fencing, modern pentathlon, weight lifting and synchronised swimming. To immerse yourself in rhythmic gymnastics. At least Australia’s interests will peak early – we always know if we’re in for a good medal hall once the swimming starts. Choose whether you want to keep watching after that or not.

But watching it on your couch is mighty boring, so we’ve compiled this quick list of places you’ll be guaranteed to find a big screen and seating to recline into as you watch divers make those faces in slow motion

Burnside Village, 477 Portrush Road – Shopping isn’t exactly everyone’s sport of choice, but coffee and food definitely is. Burnside Village are teaming up in with big Screen TV for the full duration of the Olympics to screen on a massive LED screen. Perfectly enjoyed with a Wendy’s ice cream…

Adelaide Oval, War Memorial Drive – Our home of sport will be hosting a breakfast on Saturday, 6 August in the William Magarey Room from 7.30am to toast our athletes by eating and drinking the carbs they’ve denied themselves furing months of training. Tickets are available from the South Australian Olympic Council if you’re keen. Key events will also be screened in Telstra Plaza, so you can watch the sprinters as you waddle along the riverbank during your leisurely stroll.

Arkaba Hotel, 150 Glen Osmond Road – Generally anytime The Arkaba is open, the Sports Bar will have the Olympics on (of course that might change when the Footy is on). That’s from 7am to late at night and they’ll have their all day menu serving until 10pm. They’ll be able to look after you, and nurse you through those sores from you 18 hour Olympics binge.

Adelaide Casino, North Terrace – Alongside hosting their very own ‘Adelaide Games‘ this month, the Casino will be hosting a dinner Australian sport’s spiritual icon, Steven Bradbury, on Tuesday, 16 August. Tickets are available here. But without beating around the bush, the Grandstand Sports Bar is exactly where you should be this Olympics. All sport, all the time.

The Lakes Resort Sports Bar, 141 Brebner Dr, West Lakes – Perhaps it’s just coincidence that that The Lakes Resort are hosting a very special One Night In Rio event on the same evening that the Olympic Games open in Brazil. While that promises a 5 hour packed dinner, show and dancing escapade, their iconic sports bar “The Fifth” also comes to mind in terms of suburban destinations who know sports well. Their main 103 inch plasma and 12 additional screens will no doubt feature plenty of Olympics coverage.

The Saracens, 82 Carrington Street – The team at The Saracens have made us a pledge – they will be showing as many Australians competing as possible on their screens. If an Aussie looks like scraping a bronze medal, they’ll have it showing. If it’s gold or silver, even better. If some poor bloke is getting thrashed, they’ll be showing him getting his participation award. That’s showing some true Aussie spirit!

We’re sure there are plenty of other hotels doing things, but this is our pick for locations.

Close to 1000 medals will be decided in the coming 3 weeks for incredibly deserving athletes who have sacrificed a lot of their lives for the love of competition. Then, once it’s all done we wait to see if they proclaim this the “Best Olympics Ever”… don’t they just do that every time now? Imagine if they didn’t! We’ll certainly be tuning in for that moment.
