If you’ve always wanted to go skiing or snowboarding in Japan or Canada, now is the time to start planning for late 2017 early 2018! If you’re trying to decide where in the world you should hit the slopes – here’s a quick overview of five of the most well-known skiing destinations in the world thanks to the folk at Peregrine Travel.
While there are some beautiful spots to ski in our own backyard – Perisher Blue, Thredbo, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham – just to name a few, we thought we’d take a look at some of the amazing places to ski around the world.
Japan, Europe, Canada, USA and New Zealand all have an amazing selection of resorts available depending on your requirements. Whether you want a family friendly resort, somewhere that caters for your specific level of expertise or somewhere which will also give you an insight into the local culture – there are resorts to suit the needs of almost everyone.
Japan
Japan is home to some of the most world-class ski resorts in the world, with copious amounts of high-quality snow. Resorts range from small to large and can be found from the northern island of Hokkaido to the southern island of Kyushu. Depending on what you are after will determine where you should go to Ski. Resorts with the most snowfall (recorded) are Niseko Ski resort in Hokkaido, Rusutsu and Asahidake. The largest Ski resort in Japan is Shiga Kogen. Although there are no ski resorts within Tokyo, it is possible to do day trips to ski or snowboard from the city.
Europe
The Alps, Austria, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland and France are just a few of the amazing destinations where you can enjoy a ski holiday in Europe. The breathtaking scenery, world-class slopes and versatile terrains for every level are enough to get anybody booking a European winter escape! Some of the most well-known and prestigious resorts include Chamonix Mont-Blanc in the French Alps, Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites, Grindelwald in Switzerland and Saalbach Hinterglemm which is Austria’s largest ski resort.
Canada
When you think skiing in Canada the first place to pop into your mind is usually Whistler, the home of skiing events at the 2010 Winter Olympics. This huge resort in British Columbia offers ample activities for skiers and non-skiers alike and is the most visited resort in Canada. However, there are many other resorts to choose from, all offering a unique skiing experience. These include Banff in Alberta, Mount Tremblant in Quebec, Blue Mountain Resort in Ontario and Sun Peaks in British Columbia. Whistler and Banff are quite busy, so if you are looking for a less crowded experience you may want to consider avoiding these resorts. Canadian ski resorts are known for being a bit more laid back and relaxed compared to the rest of the world and of course are a must do on any enthusiastic skier’s bucket list.
USA
Ski resorts in the USA are often on a gigantic scale covering vast areas of skiing terrain. They can be found across many states including Colorado, Utah, California and Idaho. More well-known resorts are Aspen, Snowbird ski resort, Vail Ski resort and Heavenly. Ski resorts in the US offer variety and cater for all skill levels and interests and are convenient and easy to get too.
New Zealand
If you’re after a ski trip that’s a little closer to home, then you can’t go past New Zealand. Amazing landscapes, beautiful ski towns and a unique culture to experience. The South Island is home to three main ski areas, Christchurch and Canterbury, Queenstown and Wanaka and Mount Cook Mackenzie. There is also the Central North Island, where you can ski on an active volcano!
Two major differences about skiing in New Zealand is that there are very limited trees on the slopes (which is great if you’re a beginner having trouble skiing the right direction) and accommodation on the mountain is very rare, with most people staying in ski towns off the mountain.
