It’s rare to go a week in Adelaide without bumping into a super friendly face and hearing or saying the expression ‘Adelaide is such a small world..’. Everyone knows someone who knows someone. And that’s why this place is so damn great. We are like a big happy family welcoming each other and all newcomers (either those visiting or here to stay) with open arms.
A suburb oozing Adelaide’s sense of awesomeness (groovy eateries, local spirit, practical shops and positive vibes) is Goodwood. Found just south of the CBD, this eclectic community hub boasts more than 170 years of history.
Goodwood Road is well and truly Alive & Vibrant (NB: Alive & Vibrant is the Goodwood Precinct’s motto and this article spells out a few reasons why). The kind souls that make up the Goodwood Traders Association host events like the Christmas Markets for its much-loved community members. In fact ‘Tis almost the season! Not to mention Goodwood is the home of the Royal Adelaide Show (can we just take a moment to acknowledge the $2 Bertie Beatle showbag still kicking on?!). Oh and if that’s not enough, the recent ‘Goodwood Groove’ even got Network Ten’s The Project talking about it! #HumbleBrag
The Capri Theatre – 141 Goodwood Road, Goodwood
Nothing tops the retro feels of The Capri Theatre, the groovy art deco style building on the corner of Goodwood Road and Gilbert Street, home of new releases and cult classics.
Like many of us during our teenage years, this 75-year-old curvaceous beauty has gone through many phases. Born the New Goodwood Star Theatre in 1941, under the influence of Greater Union’s acquisition it identified as the New Cinema Curzon in 1964 until the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (SA Division) purchased the building and the Capri Theatre finally found its true sense of self.
It may be iconic, but the Capri Theatre keeps up with all things trending. With a need to upgrade its film technology in 2012 (cheers to the SA Government and Unley Council for helping a sister out) the Capri Theatre is a significant game-player in the rapidly evolving industry.
Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market – Leader Street, Wayville
Speaking of Alive & Vibrant, the Adelaide Farmers’ Market is the prime example of Goodwood’s vision. Sundays from 9am – 1pm farmers and producers alike represent this wonderful state’s delicious produce in the forms of seasonal, regional, fresh produce and food products. We’re talking fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, baked goods and all round delicious eats galore. Nothing shows community spirit more than 6,000 locals flocking to this hub every week bonding over food.

Whisk Patisserie – 95 Goodwood Road, Goodwood
Cake shouldn’t just be for birthdays and office functions. Even if you’re not a sweet tooth, it’s difficult to look across the range of incredible pastry-based sweets from Whisk Patisserie and not feel tempted. Also a great lunch destination with a range of quiche and bread housed goodies, there should be a ‘carb only’ diet trend started in honour of their food.
Ginger’s Coffee Studio – 109 Goodwood Road, Goodwood
Three words: All day breakfast. Need we say more? Okay, we will… At Ginger’s you can expect a typical (aka delicious) breakfast menu with a Ginger’s spin (think vego big brekkie with falafels and house-made Bircher muesli with roasted rhubarb). Lunch menu features the likes of bruschetta, burgers and salads. Suited to satisfy the taste buds of both meat lovers and vegos. With a bright red and white logo practically shouting at you from the street front and a funky Ginger’s mural down the building’s side you can’t miss it!

Eggless – 162 Goodwood Road, Goodwood
(Technically, you can’t spend an afternoon here, but evenings are most definitely on the cards)
A cafe designed by people who love hanging out in cafes (Eelin and Ken) for people who love hanging out in cafes (practically everyone). Eggless is your late-night home away from home. The menu changes each month inspired by fresh local produce focusing on flavors, textures and a little bit of fun. All desserts are vegetarian and egg free with vegan friendly options. If you like the sound of Brihannah’s Yuzu Cheese and Honey Pears Sundae or a Black Sticky Rice Sundae you should probably visit Eggless. STAT.
Arriba Grill – 476 Goodwood Road, Cumberland Park
Move over Netflix and Chill, we’re now talking Arriba Grill. There are some quality Adelaide has some quality Mexican restaurants, but this place is waaaay up there with the best. Following a concept of “make it as you like it” (only using fresh and tasty ingredients of course) Arriba started with burritos, then added nachos, soft tacos and enchiladas to there repertoire after realising they were onto a good thing. If you can handle a little heat, try the house made chipotle mayonnaise for a kick of spice and all things nice.
The Sneaky Pickle – 267 Goodwood Road, Kings Park
This food truck turned restaurant serves all your fave American style food. You can’t go past the Smoked Pulled Pork or BBQ Brisket Sandwich partnered with a side or two. Sides include but are not limited to Mac Cheese, Slaw, Fried Pickles and Texas Beans… OK we can practically see your mouth watering from here. TLDR: Pickles are underrated, go here and you’ll understand why.

The Goody – 75 Goodwood Road, Goodwood
Quality meals, decent beers and chill vibes, keen? The Goody is a strong hit with the locals offering meal specials from Sunday to Thursday featuring all the things you love to eat (think schnitzels, burgers, fried chicken, steak, pizza) and not one but three bar options with daily happy hour from 5 – 7pm weeknights. Seriously, what more could a pub offer?!
Sugar & Spice Cakes – 190 Goodwood Road Millswood
When it comes to acing that feature birthday dessert, Sugar & Spice takes the cake. The talented team of award winning designers produce mighty fine cakes for all sorts of occasions, even celebs want a slice of the action. Sugar & Spice have made cakes for Oprah, J-Lo, Pink, Beyonce and the Maddens (just a subtle name drop) so it’s safe to say their cake game strong.
Trouble & Strife – 123 Goodwood Road, Goodwood
Good things come in small packages. Trouble & Strife might not be the largest cafe, but their more than makes up for it. The thiftshop style decor out front draws you in, while their brunch game will have you coming back over and over again.

The Red Geranium Thrift Shop – 486 Goodwood Road, Cumberland Park
If you’re into thrifting, Goodwood Road is the place to go. The Red Geranium Thrift Shop opened to raise money for Doctors Without Borders. Here you can find neat vintage threads and antique goodness. DWB’s humanitarian approach to providing treatment and care to people who need help regardless of borders makes it a super worthy cause to support and the generous volunteers at this thrift shop take pride in their work. Orana Op Shop – 145 Goodwood Road, Goodwood
Goodwood Road, more like Goodwill road, am I right?! Orana is another gem of a thrift shop, in this case playing a vital role in supporting South Australians living with disability. Shoutout to the amazing volunteers running this place, straight up reinforcing Goodwood’s sense of community. So do a good deed and get your quality bargain finds from Orana.
