10 Reasons To Foster A Greyhound In 2018

With reasons ranging from insta-worthy cred and neighbourhood fame, to the simple fact that you would be helping gorgeous dogs to prepare for a forever home, there are many reasons to get on board with the Greyhound Adoption Program’s foster care system.

Greyhounds are (arguably) one of the most gracious dogs around, they’re soft, velvety, and don’t need much exercise. We’re here to tell you that you can not only help them, but you also migh fall in love and end up with a small hoard of greyhound doggos in your house through fostering,

The Greyhound Adoption Program SA is now offering a foster program called ‘You. Me. 6 Weeks – and you may just find that it would work perfectly for you.

If you are interested in getting a pet but don’t have the time or lifestyle to facilitate a full time commitment just yet… then the foster care program might be the way to go. Take a look at their convincing list below.

1. Greyhounds are Gre-yt! They have no doggy smell, a short coat that rarely sheds, minimal barking and only need a quick 20 minute walk daily (if that!).

2. There is a continuous supply of non-racing or retired greyhounds that need to find homes. Fostering a greyhound will help get them ready for their fur-ever home.

3. You will become part of a huge and ever growing community. People are CRAZY over greyhounds – that’s a fact. An array of groups can be online where greyhound lovers unite and share their photos and stories. Check out Adelaide Responsible Greyhound Owners Facebook Group & GAP SA’s Facebook Page as a start.

4. And just on that, the greyhound gives you some insta worthy cred. You will probably join the hundreds that have created an Instagram account for their greyhound and start using hashtags such as #instagrey and #greyhoundsofinstagram

5. Fostering a greyhound is temporary. You’ll have a pooch for a 6 week period before they get matched with their perfect adoptive home allowing you to commit to your travel and other commitments without needing to worry about who is looking after the dog.

6. But they know some of you will fall in love, and don’t worry, you are able to adopt your hound if you wish. There is a term GAP SA have coined for this… It’s #fosterfail

7. You will learn a tonne from a greyhound about life especially the importance of eat, sleep and repeat.

8. And while we are at, the kids will also learn responsibilities such as cleaning after the dog, taking them for walks etc. Consider it as a trial run for the real thing.

9. You will become a celebrity in your neighbourhood. Go for a walk anywhere with your grey and you will be stopped – numerous times over.

10. It’s the easiest decision ever. Not only is the commitment a relatively low impact one, you will also be given everything you need to foster a greyhound AND you get a weekly reimbursement for your efforts = win, win and win!

Whilst the dogs have been well cared for in the racing kennel environment, they truly do benefit from time in foster care prior to adoption in order to help them adjust to life in a domestic environment.

With two options for foster care, including ‘general foster care’ (which helps to prepare the greyhounds for adoption) as well as ‘foster to adopt’ (which is exactly what it sounds like), there are ample opportunities to help support local doggies around our state… and the Greyhound Adoption Program will be there to guide you through your foster care experience and provide any information you need at any time.
