Mainline Drive-in announces its closure

The iconic Mainline Drive-in has announced its closure due to the changing cinema industry, daylight savings, film piracy and the COVID-19 epidemic.

The iconic Mainline Drive-in has announced this summer will be its last.

Wallis Cinemas’ Gepps Cross Drive-in took to Facebook to announce the closure for February 2022.

“Adelaide’s last remaining Drive-in Theatre at Gepps Cross is preparing for its last summer of movie entertainment,” Mainline Drive-in took to its Facebook.

“After operating for more that 65 years, the Wallis family has made the very hard decision to cease its operations at Gepps Cross Mainline Drive-in.

“We have supported the Mainline Drive-in since 1955; no one is sadder than us to see it close.

“It was not a decision we have made lightly, but with the changing nature of the cinema industry, the introduction of daylight saving, film piracy and now the lengthy COVID-19 epidemic, we as a family all agree it is the best decision for the future of Wallis Cinema.

“The mainline will continue its operations through Summer to give South Australians one last chance to enjoy the Drive-in Experience with the light on the big outdoor screen being switched off for the last time in February 2022.”

In the post, Mainline Drive-in stated that the team intends to make this summer at Mainline a memorable one with an amazing line-up which it is calling Our Last Summer; Memories That Remain.

The lineup for the summer will soon be announced with details for the final program coming soon.

The Gepps Cross Sunday Market will remain operational through the summer, and it expected to continue operation after the Drive-ins officially close.

“Thank you to our amazing staff and to South Australia for your support,” Mainline Drive-in said in the statement.

“We look forward to creating many special memories with you all.”
