Local Designer Set To Debut SS18 Collection MBFW Russia

Adelaide fashion designer Katya Komarova is bringing her designs all the way to Russia for the Russian Fashion Festival.

Adelaide is home to many talents, we have produced the likes of Paul Vasileff (extraordinary designer of Paolo Sebastian), award-winning actress Teresa Palmer and our latest success is none other than Russian born model/designer Katya Komarova who will debut her SS18 collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Moscow. Katya is no stranger to the Russian fashion scene, having features her handbag designs the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Moscow in October 2012.

Katya began her fashion career as a model before studying bag design in Florence and developing her timeless style.Eventually making her way to Adelaide, Katya launched her label Katya Komarova in 2014. Featuring a range of handcrafted handbags and accessories, the designer promotes stylish and wearable looks inspired by her Russian roots.

What sets Katya’s work apart is her use of sustainable materials such as vegetable tanned leather and cotton. Her commitment to sustainability extends to the decision to make her handbags seam-free, allowing every piece of leather to be reused (that’s if you can bear to part with the original).

Katya is also part of the #FashionSeries by MBFW Russia, see below to get more of a vibe on what Katya is all about:

To further promote this recycling message, Katya took her SS18 collection to a composting facility in Langhorne Creek for a recent photoshoot.

Or… be sure to check out her designs closer to home this week at Adelaide Fashion Festival. More details below.

While mounds of dirt aren’t our idea of high fashion, Katya says she’s trying to make a point about the ‘fast demands’ of the fashion industry.

“As a designer, avoiding waste and lessoning my impact on the planet is important,” Katya says.

“As a location for my SS18 collection it lets me express my philosophy about living sustainably in a way which will attracts positive attention.”

Whatever the message, there’s no denying that Katya’s new ‘minimalist luxury’ style makes a stunning contrast to the piles of composting waste.

With the help of two TAFE SA graduates, local designer Katya is preparing to showcase her latest work as part of Adelaide Fashion Festival 2017. She’ll be showcasing her latest looks (including footwear) at Torrens Parade Ground, October 12. Visit Adelaide Fashion Festival for details and tickets!
