Head North for winter

north-saladWinter is well and truly upon us and so too, is North’s winter menu. The choice selections from Chef de Cuisine Ashley Brandom are the ideal comfort as the wind and rain bluster on the other side of the glass-front wall of the Adelaide Casino’s signature restaurant.

Brandom is one of South Australia’s most exciting young chefs, having impressed some of Australia’s toughest food critics. In these darker, cold months, he’s featuring a delectable range for most tastes and dietary needs, from sourdough bread entrees to char-grilled beef steaks. He serves local foods where he can, and quality is paramount, right down to the grade 9 Mayura Station Wagyu beef rump – which is mouth-wateringly divine!

The colourful mixed-grain salad of beetroot, coriander, orange, mint & yoghurt became a personal favourite recently (pictured), but it only just surpassed the pan-seared snapper fillet which melted in the mouth.

Entrees begin at only $2.90ea for Oysters Kilpatrick and include salmon fish cakes, port & mushroom terrine, mini rare Wagu beef buns, and roasted lamb cutlets in a hollandaise sauce, to name but a few of the many offerings.

For mains, a vegetarian risotto for $24 begins the selection, comprising green peas, mushrooms, spinach, parmesan cheese and truffle oil. Heavier options include surf and turf plates, pure Wagyu beef steaks, seafood and chicken dishes. The range of sides include comforting favourites like steamed seasonal vegetables, shoestring fries or a garden salad, through to the more exotic Korean kimchi.

Those with a sweet tooth don’t miss out with North’s decadent desserts, including chocolate and orange ripple meringue, vanilla bean custard, milk dumplings, petit fours and the utterly evil sticky rice cake with mandarin, coconut and lemongrass ice cream. Those preferring something more savoury are offered an assortment of premium local cheeses, all of which go down nicely with a glass of quality wine!

The chill of the night can be starved off with fortifieds, cognacs, scotch whiskeys and liqueurs or, for the drivers, teas, coffees and hot chocolates, with soy milk and decaf options available.

North is located on the ground floor of the Adelaide Casino, near the corner of Station Road and North Terrace. It is open for lunch 11.30am-3pm Monday – Saturday and for dinner from 5pm-9.30pm Sunday to Thursday and 5pm-Late Friday and Saturday. Reservations are recommended and can be made on (08) 8218 4152.
