Though it’s only half an hour from the centre of Adelaide, it’s easy to feel like you’re in another world as you wander down Hahndorf’s charming Main Street. Smoke curls out from the chimneys of old stone cottages and family-owned businesses open their doors in welcome beneath the gum trees captured so beautifully in Hans Heysen’s watercolours.
And if you want to see one of his paintings for yourself, it’s as easy as popping into The Haus, where owner and director Jason Duffield recently paid a South Australian record price for one of the German artist’s early paintings.
Now it takes pride of place in the Main Street restaurant, which serves traditional German and modern Australian cuisine with a rotating menu of local seasonal produce. Owner and director Jason Duffield’s family have lived in Hahndorf since 1839, so they know a thing or two about tradition but this year he decided to try something new.
When the restaurant entered the best Venue Caterer category in the Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence they were up against stiff competition from the likes of national catering company Epicure, which makes their win on Monday night all the more remarkable.
Speaking about the win, Duffield noted that “the judges said that they were incredibly impressed by our food, service, presentation, styling and overall professionalism, telling us that it had been a long time since they had seen this level of service.”
The prize now sits alongside the Bronze Award for Tourism Restaurants & Catering Services at the South Australian Tourism Awards from last year. So whether you’re planning a romantic weekend or a large conference, there’s no better place to visit in the Adelaide Hills.
