From Chocolate Making To Coding – Here Are Some School Holiday Ideas In The City

Keep the kids busy with these crazy cool hands-on workshops.

You might have seen the new life being breathed into the O-RAH site over the last couple of months with loads of pop-up festivals and new businesses moving in—and now, Lot Fourteen has plans to burst into activity just in time for the school holidays!

Embrace your inner child alongside your kids and join Lot Fourteen for three days of a number of creative and crazy cool hands-on workshops from Tuesday 9 to Thursday 11 October.

There are activities for the budding scientists of Adelaide, but some more arty options for the little creatives just waiting to flourish.

If your kids are interested in computers, get them involved in Tuesday’s three-hour coding and programming workshop. While coding might seem daunting and difficult, this workshop will show anyone how simple it really is—whether you’re a beginner, an old hand, or our future robot overlord.

These workshops run on 9 October in two sessions, from 10am to 1pm or 1:30pm to 4:30pm, and are suitable for students aged 10 to 15 years old. Tickets are $15 per person and places are limited to 30 students per session, so head on over to the Lot Fourteen website to get your kid booked in. Accompanying adults are free and encouraged to stick around! Who knows—you might learn something too.

Have a little budding rocket scientist? Well, there’s a pretty cool workshop for them. Thursday’s three-hour workshop introduces kids to the basics of flight, lift, and drag. Using their newfound knowledge, they’ll get to create and launch their own air-powered paper rockets.

This workshop, perfect for students ages 5 to 10 years old, is on 11 October from 10am to 1pm or 1:30pm to 4:30pm. Tickets are $15 per person and you can get them here.

As a toast to the wonderful mix of creativity and technology that is gaming, Lot Fourteen is also offering free play gaming in the Lot Fourteen LAN. For those of you who have never heard the term LAN, it just refers to a group of people gaming together! Your kids will be playing video games, but at least they’ll be out of the house, socialising with others, and learning about strategy and teamwork. This particular activity is available on all three days of Lot Fourteen’s activity days between 10am to 4pm and all primary and secondary school aged kids are welcome. The best part is it’s completely free!

What if my kid is more into art than science?’ I hear you ask. Lot Fourteen is hosting some awesome crafty workshops on Wednesday 10 October too.

First workshop of the day is a chocolate making activity from 10am to 11am (and a second workshop from 11:30am to 12:30pm). Yes, that’s right, you get to learn how to make your own chocolate from scratch, decorate it, and eat it too. This is a slightly messy workshop for children ages 12 and up, so if it sounds like your thing, tickets are $25 and are up for grabs on the Lot Fourteen website.

The afternoon workshop (1:30pm to 3:30pm) lets bigger kids try their hand at making colourful macramé pot hangers to take home. Tickets for this are $55 and include all the materials and instructions necessary (but not the pot itself or the plant). Again, secure a spot here.

If you’re on the look out for fun and informative school holidays activities, Lot Fourteen has you covered. The Old School Bus food truck will also be hanging around just in case you get the munchies while hanging around.

Keep an eye on the website and Facebook page too in case of any updates in exciting activities!
