Fringe Review: Sam Perry Live

An exploration of modern music with a man and his loop station.

There’s really nothing to compare to Sam Perry’s incredible one-man show. Equipped with nothing but his voice and a loop station, Perry captivates and amazes with his truly unique and haunting sounds.

All the way from Perth, WA, Perry was scouted by the ‘360 All-stars’ back in 2013 where he joined their travelling pack of circus performers and world record holders. With them, he performed at huge venues and sold out shows all around the world, most notably a month long stint on Broadway in New York City.

Perry uses his amazing range of vocals to create beat-boxing, deep bass lines and goose bump inducing melodies, a combination that really only makes sense when you hear it first-hand. Perry uses a mixture of pop classics and his own original work to create something completely different and unusual to mainstream music. Quite clearly a natural born performer, Perry looks comfortable and fiercely passionate on stage – perhaps why the audience spent most of their time either with their mouths hanging open or bouncing out of their chairs in excitement.

The Gallery at The Hindley was a fitting venue, with the modern vibe complimenting Perry’s style. It wasn’t long before the low-lit, intimate atmosphere was turned into a strobe-lit nightclub experience as Perry’s tunes and energy built.

I found myself at times being so enthralled in the music that I had to remind myself that every single beat, every single tune and every single sound that I was hearing was made purely from Perry’s vocal chords and if that’s not enough to wow you into getting down and seeing him for yourself, then I don’t know what is.
