Fringe Review: Deaf Comedy Fam

Deaf Comedy Fam is what the Fringe is all about. A show that exposes you to new ways at looking at things and educates you in a way where you don’t realise it’s happening because you’re laughing so much.

Deaf Comedy Fam is what the Fringe is all about. A show that exposes you to new ways at looking at things and educates you in a way where you don’t realise it’s happening because you’re laughing so much. The word Deaf in the title may make you skip straight past the write up in the Fringe guide if you are not hearing impaired but stop right there: this show isn’t just for Deaf people but instead a show that brings quite an extrodinary language to life and introduces you to the hilarious childhood stories of Ray Bradshaw. In this clever show, Ray uses a mixture of methods to recollect his childhood through spoken language as well as UK sign language (cool fact: sign language is different in each country, however UK sign language and Auslan are similar enough to understand).

Fringe season brings all our favourite comedians to town and allows us comedy lovers to dive straight into a smorgsboard of shows; but imagine if you could only see your favourite comedian on one night out of 14 shows because only one show had an Auslan translator or missing them altogether because none of the shows had a translator. You could ask a friend to translate for you but that isn’t always possible and not everyone can make the night that the translator is on stage. So while I am sure this show will naturally be popular with the Deaf community it should also be one that all the comedy lovers of Adelaide get behind, not just to show how cool it would be to have more of these types of shows but to throw your support behind Ray, who is not just an hilarious comedian but also a really clever guy.

If you are after an early night show to kick off your evening of entertainment or are after something just a little bit different than the usual stand up comedy routine then Deaf Comedy Fam is the show for you. Who am I kidding – it is for anyone who loves comedy.
