Can I Get An Amen?! has to be the most intimate, sharing and absolutely hilarious show that I have seen. Kaitlyn Rogers’ performance simply has to be experienced, with her frenetic energy and clever humour belying the more serious message underneath the fun. This passionate and articulate woman fills the stage and our hearts with every grimace, move and word, and her Word is the Word of Whoopi. Taking Sister Act as her hymn book, and Whoopi Goldberg’s “ Word “ as her gospel , she is driven to share this truth of Sass with one and all.
Exaggerated gestures of holiness gave us the first glimmer of understanding of the innate ridiculousness of the evangelical world, as Rogers bounced around the stage ramming the message home, in the funniest way possible. Using popular culture dance routines and RuPaul’s catch-phrases, she carries the sass worship to its ultimate point, and shares her bounty with audience members who participated in ways varying from sashaying and giving responses, to the outright drag queen death drop.
Parodying accents and style as she utilises both verbal and body language to the utmost, Rogers carries the audience along, willingly, on the journey to fully becoming yourself, with tears of laughter which eventually turn to genuine tears of empathy and sorrow. The intensity of emotion when the underlying point of the show is realised, shattering in its suddenness, results in a shocked silence which is appropriate to mourn the hiding of self for safety and survival reasons.
Kaitlyn Rogers is a personality whose performances will stick in the minds of everyone who sees her shows.
