Magician Tim Motley brings Hollywood noir to the Adelaide stage with 6 Quick Dick Tricks: A Dirk Darrow Investigation. Motley assumes the character of Dirk Darrow, private investigator to the rich and famous. Dressed in a trench coat and fedora, using 1940s slang, and dragging on a fake cigarette, Motley pays homage to the golden age of cinema – and never breaks character.

Motley’s titular tricks are framed around his private eye aesthetic and include card magic, book tests, and a series of impressive predictions. While these classics may not fool everyone, Motley is a first-rate performer with excellent slight of hand when required. His broken bottle and musical chair sequences are innovative and smoothly delivered. There is no denying that Motley’s unique blend of bravado and humour is irresistible. He plays off the crowd effortlessly, adapts jokes for a bigger laugh and is not above making fun of himself.

Between magic acts, Motley describes the unsolved case that haunts Dirk Darrow: a murder reminiscent of paperback mystery novels. Each bizarre step in the adventure ties into his next routine, and often involves a nervous-looking member of the audience.

It is Motley’s delivery as Dirk Darrow that makes these six tricks unforgettable. A mystery not to be missed this Fringe season.
