Dessert Lovers To Get New Place Of Worship

For those of us in Adelaide with a sweet tooth, our options are about to get even better, with the arrival of a new dessert mecca early next month.

Like Squirrels hoarding nuts in the cosy confines of their trees during Winter, so too do the people of Adelaide tend to gravitate towards intimate spaces, filled with nourishing treats to get us through the cooler months.

For those of us in Adelaide with a sweet tooth, our options are about to get even better, with the arrival of a new dessert mecca early next month. Kitchen and dessert bar 50sixone is set to open its doors at Hyde Park, and it’s giving us every reason to drop what we’re doing and let our Winter hoarding tendencies kick in.

Taking its name from the suburb’s post code, the decadent offerings of 50sixone include custom homemade ice creams, red velvet pancakes, and French pastries.

All-day breakfast and light lunches are also a highlight on the menu, including bacon and egg breakfast sliders served with goats’ cheese and cherry tomatoes.

Co-Owner Simon Flocco says having been in the food industry, managing cafes and restaurants for more than a decade, he has a very clear vision for 50sixone.

“Much of my inspiration came from New York where I saw a bar with a decadent dessert menu.

“From the décor to the desserts, the café feel during the day, to the bar at night, it’s the theatre of the entire experience – we want to give our customers the whole show.

“We’ve been working incredibly hard to create a unique space so that when people walk in, 50sixone immediately has the wow factor.

“However, I’m keen not to give too much away and will keep a couple of surprises for the grand opening.”

With a full renovation underway incorporating custom-made furniture and fixtures, the space promises to be a mixture of rustic natural colours and textures with a glam warehouse feel.

Calling on his father’s talents as a boilermaker, Simon has had the entire street-facing wall, front doors and tables all custom-made, with a local artist commissioned for design features.

50sixone will house Australia’s most expensive ice cream laced with gold leaf to add to the visuals and will introduce ‘ice cream pops’ to the local market – custom themed ice cream.

Ice cream pops have been a huge hit in the Eastern states and can be made in various shapes and designs depending on preference.

“From simple displays such as hot tea poured over a glass of ice, to elaborate dessert cocktails that look like they’ve come straight out of Charlie’s Chocolate Factory, it’s all about the song and dance the food does to get to your tastebuds.

“I’m passionate about every detail of 50sixone and can’t wait to share it with dessert lovers of all ages.”

50sixone is co-owned by Simon Flocco and Anthony Canova and is set to open its doors late June at 144a King William Road, Hyde Park.
