Commemorative Art Mural For Holden Workers Taking Shape In Elizabeth

A large-scale mural will be designed by Australian artist, Cam Scale, and featured at Elizabeth City Centre as a tribute to the Holden community and its people. Throughout the process, Scale will be mentoring emerging South Australian artist, Sam Brooks.

A stunning art mural with important reflections of South Australia’s history is coming soon, and we think it is definitely worth a mention.

A large-scale mural will be designed by Australian artist, Cam Scale, and featured on the external Harris Scarfe wall at Elizabeth City Centre as a tribute to the GM Holden community and its people. Throughout the process, Scale will be mentoring emerging South Australian artist, Sam Brooks.

Scale’s designs were made with the support of former Holden and Supply chain workers and their families. Two focus groups provided context to the designs, truly capturing an industry that was part of the social fabric of the northern community.

The Holden production line in northern Adelaide shut down for the last time in October last year, ending 69 years of Australian-made car manufacturing.

The commemorative piece will span across 40 metres of external wall by the centre’s northern/Harris Scafe entrance on the corner of Oxenham Drive and Playford Boulevard, and is a partnership project between the City of Playford, the Department of State Development, Arts SA, Elizabeth City Centre, Adelaide Fringe and GM Holden.

The mural will add to Adelaide Fringe celebrations at Playford Palace in February and is featured through Street Art Explosion promotion.

So be sure to take a look as the mural takes shape. It is sure to be a stunning piece, with important reflections an industry that helped to shape our state.
