Schild Estate Says Cheers To Twenty Years

Schild Estate are celebrating 20 years as a wine producer, and we think that is something worth highlighting and congratulating. Flourishing from a retirement project into an international wine label, this story is well worth a read.

Here at Glam Adelaide, we embrace any opportunity to say ‘cheers.’ Luckily, we have been able to find another reason to do so. Schild Estate are celebrating 20 years as a wine producer, and we think that is something worth highlighting and congratulating. Flourishing from a retirement project into an international wine label, this story is well worth a read.

Unbeknown to many, Schild Estate started out as simply a retirement dream for founder, Ed Schild. Prior to 1998, all of the fruit was sold to other winemakers in the Barossa. However, with a dream to make a little wine from his vineyard, Ed began creating.

“My dream was to create a family legacy that we can all be proud of for generations to come,” says Ed.

Now family owned and operated, it is fair to say that this dream was realised.

Ed’s eldest daughter, Judy Schild, says she still remembers the day they opened the doors to their cellar on July 20, 2000. She says it was a significant day for all of them, but that the pride on her father’s face was something she will never forget.

“The day that I walked into the warehouse when all the barrels and dry goods had been put into the new shed with Dad, I looked at him and said, “well your retirement has grown a little out of proportion to what you had envisaged,’ and the look on his face at this was priceless,” Judy says.

Ed Schild says it has always been about making wine to reflect what the vineyards can do. In this way, it is easy to understand that the wines are created with passion and authenticity, from real earth in the Southern Barossa by generations of a family who have made that place their home.

“We make wine according to ‘Time and Place’ meaning we make wines to what the vintages dictate through the seasons, and place is the results of the wine taken from our unique parcels of Southern Barossa fruit,” says Judy.

Distributed in all states of Australia and in 26 countries around the world, it is fair to say that this dream has truly flourished. With the USA being the largest overseas market followed very closely by China and now some Eastern block European countries like Ukraine and Poland, Schild Estate has made its mark, not only in South Australia, but all over the world.

“I never expected that the brand of Schild Estate would be where it is today and very proud of what we have all achieved across 20 years.” says Ed.

Realising that passion remains in the heart of his family is everything to Ed. He says he feels reassured knowing that the dream is going to be held safely in the hands of the next generation.

So not only are we celebrating 20 years of the gorgeous Schild Estate wine, but we are also saying ‘cheers’ to 20 years of family, 20 years of trust and 20 years of the surprising growth of a retirement project grown into a wine brand available the world over.

What an inspiring story of realising and nurturing a dream. Good on you, Schild Estate.
