Charity Garden Party In Oakbank

An old-style garden party is being organised as a fundraiser for the Ponheary Ly Foundation.

Things of the past often make a comeback and while delicious high teas have become a popular weekend past time, there are still not garden party cambodiatoo many traditional garden parties on offer.

So on October 19th the Ponheary Ly Foundation is holding a spring garden party at one of the Adelaide Hills’ most historic homes, Dalintober House at Oakbank. Tickets are $50 per person, with 100% of all tickets sales being donated to the Foundation.

An old-style garden party is being organised as a fundraiser for the Ponheary Ly Foundation. Ponheary Ly is a Cambodian teacher who survived the Khmer Rouge regime of the late ‘70’s and determined to make a difference to the children of her country. Starting with the teaching of just one student, the Ponheary Ly Foundation now supports over 2,600 rural school children across Cambodia.

The garden party will be set amongst the stunning gardens of the historic Oakbank home, Dalintober House.
Rarely open to the public, this garden will be at its beautiful spring best! Many parts of the garden are framed by a beautiful collection of trees, and the wisteria arbour, which will be in full bloom, will add an air of enchantment for guests while they take afternoon tea in its ample shade.

With huge, ancient canary island oak trees, stretches of dry stone walls, sweeping lawn and plentiful beds of richly coloured blooms, vegetable plot, fruit trees, kitchen garden, there are treats to discover at every turn. Horses wander the timber-fenced paddock, with its own petite prune tree woodland, exuding true country ambience alongside the stable complex.

For the keen gardeners, other attractions include an upright Manchurian pear avenue, with hedges defining different areas of the garden. Indigenous plants have been planted to encourage fauna and provide a wildlife corridor through the property.

With gentle curving beds and deciduous trees sheltering plantings of bulbs, perennials and roses in a blaze of colourful swathes this garden is truly a delight.

And apart from all this, the historic two-storey stone residence and the gigantic Algerian oak is a drawcard in itself. South Australia is fortunate to have a piece of its history restored so beautifully. The Johnston family have had a presence in the Adelaide Hills since 1839 when the family emigrated from Scotland. Dalintober was built for one of the sons in 1866, by a stonemason brought out from the “home country”.

“Being able to offer such a wonderful afternoon of delight and entertainment to our supporters is very special and we hope that we can raise our target of $10 000”. There will be live music, an art exhibition and fashion on show – so something for “her” and “him”! said Jane Dinnison, the Australian Coordinator, for the Ponheary Ly Foundation.

“While the afternoon is centred around enjoying the amazing garden setting, along with friends, food, fun and frivolity, it would be wonderful to spread awareness of what remarkable achievements this woman, Ponheary Ly has made – against many odds” Jane commented.
