Can Adelaide’s Top Rooftop Garden Design Take Out International Award?

Landscape designer Tim Harper is flying the flag for SA in the prestigious 2017 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show as the only South Australian in the Boutique Gardens Competition.

Landscape designer Tim Harper is flying the flag for South Australia in the prestigious 2017 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. The only South Australian in the ‘Boutique Gardens Competition’, Tim will be building a show garden and showcasing his skills and creativity against fierce competition from around Australia.

The event is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and hosts over 100,000 visitors across 5 days.

Reaching lofty heights with his rooftop garden

Tim’s design ‘The Five Boroughs’ has been named as a finalist and represents 6 months of designing, researching, 3D modelling and a heartfelt dose of creative angst!

“A lot of time, preparation and sleepless nights have brought me this far. Now it’s time to put my money where my mouth is. I’m excited, honoured to be the only South Australian and ready to revel in the challenge,” says Tim Harper.

This will be Tim’s first ‘Show Garden’ build. Inspired by rooftop gardens seen in New York, he has designed a space that takes elements and materials found throughout New York and combined them with plants that thrive in Melbourne conditions, such as ‘Wendy’s Wish’ that shoot up like a fireworks display.

A feast for all the senses, the show garden features a reflecting water bowl, which sits amongst rich green plantings. The still water provokes curiosity and an overwhelming feeling of calm that is often hard to find amidst the busy metropolis.

The garden has elements such as red brick walling, softening magnolias, a Japanese Maple, native grasses that sway in the breeze, rich timber decking and areas that provide shade, shelter, privacy and protection. It is a refuge as well as offering an opportunity to take in the breathtaking skyline, sunsets and beautiful views.

Time said “I knew immediately that I wanted to do a rooftop garden.  With urban sprawl constantly chewing up green space and spitting out the same uninspiring ‘house & land package’ properties it seemed relevant to design a garden suited to the urban rooftop.  Better still it lends itself to courtyards, terraces, balconies or anywhere that is left behind once the crane is disassembled from the crowded building site.”

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show will be held 29 March – 2 April, 2017. Tim will be building his 25m2 garden in a week, showcase it for 5 days and then remove it, destroying a year’s worth of work in 3 days!
