A group of young people between the ages of ten and fourteen have come together, with the assistance of Urban Myth, to create a short play based on their own experiences of bullying. Most of the cast have been bullied or have been bullies at some stage in their lives and this work explores the actions and of both bullies and bullied, as well as that of the bystander. Trish Herreen wrote the play, using the children’s own words, and also directed the performance.

The project began with discussions about the issues, extending from there into improvised scenes, and then these were assembled into one work. The cast, Annie Arnold, Rachel Chalmers, Isobel Davies, Lily Deacon, Caitlin Hankin, Monica Hart, Maggie, James, Tess Johnson-Kelly, Lily Mounkley, Justina Patterson, Ines Portella, Xia Reeves-Smith, Luella Rosella, Ashleigh Vandemeulengraaf and Henry Vaughan, present a complex picture of bullying in its many forms, from exclusion to SMS and Facebook cyber bullying. They not only look at bullying from the point of view of children bullying each other, but also at adults bullying children, adults bullying adults and sibling rivalry.

They work through a number of scenarios and offer ways of dealing with bullying in its various forms, attempting to find solutions and resolutions. There is plenty of material here for work in classrooms after seeing the performance, which is one of the aims of this work, and this will engage young people more because it is work by their peers.

This is a fine effort by these young people and is worth wider audiences. All schools should see this.
