This year Ruby the Reindeer attempts to beat the Christmas delivery rush by starting early. She sneaks off with a sleigh full of presents and crashes into George and Amelia’s house on the eve of their school Christmas concert. With much begging she is included, but at what price? How will the concert go on and the forsaken bundle of presents be delivered?
This is another delightful story book by Nicki Greenberg. Her text entertains and her illustrations use colour and humour to extend the story she tells. The use of cork figure reindeer allows for children from all over the globe to identify with these Christmas creatures. The textured cover, complete with glitter is a lovely touch that will have even younger children wanting to hold and touch this book.
This story gives the message of planning and responsibility, even if it does go a little astray and highlights the bonds of friends who are willing to help each other. Ruby may be known as the naughtiest reindeer, but her heart is solidly in the right place. She is the four-to-six-year-old trying to get things to be better and to go right.
I recommend this as a Christmas gift for any three to seven year old child. The older children will be able to read it themselves and I guarantee the younger ones will be wriggling in your lap trying to see and hear the next page.
