Back Of The Bus – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

Presented by: Java Dance Company (NZ)
Reviewed: Thursday 2nd March

This was such a great way to spend 60 minutes in Adelaide.

Like many, I avoid catching the bus as much as possible but, when I do, I’m distracted by my own little universe, and watching the world go past. I hardly ever pay attention to what the person in front of me is doing.

Java Dance Company has, of course, turned this bus experience on its head with ‘Back of the Bus’.

This is a dance (and song) performance aboard a moving bus, as it travels around town with music pouring from the windows – from Bach to Sigur Ros.  Each of the dancers take their turn to reveal themselves and give us a look into who they are. It is all done with a kind of contageous spirit.

As the passengers, we were required to leave the bus twice, creating our own sort of flash mob in two city locations.  It was great not knowing where we were heading, and one of the highlights was discovering a unique little Adelaide venue along the way. I won't ruin the surprise for you if you do get there.

As it got darker outside, all of the movement and life on the bus became easier for the public to see. Drivers at the lights, and people on foot seemed to enjoy snippets of the show.

There was a cast of 5; Natalie Hona, Sacha Copland, and Lauren Carr from New Zealand, and 2 Adelaide girls, Georgia Timperon and Harriett Allcroft.  All were fantastic. Well done!
