After Two Year Hiatus The Henshcke Hill Of Grace Is Back

The two year wait for a drop of Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz is over.

Australia’s most famous single-vineyard wine, Henschke Hill of Grace 2012 will be released to market on 1 May 2017.

This shiraz has been hailed as the pinnacle of Australian winemaking internationally. It’s crafted from a tiny four-hectare historic dry-grown vineyard in the Eden Valley, where the remarkable gnarled sentinels are believed to be amongst the oldest producing vines in the world.

It is the first new vintage from the low-yielding single vineyard to be released in two years, after the devastation of the wet 2011, when no Henschke Hill of Grace was able to be made.

You can get the first taste of the Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz 2012 at the Annual Festival Camino on Sunday 7 May, as part of Tasting Australia. There’s only a few tickets left, you can purchase your  tickets online here.

Fifth-generation winemaker, Stephen Henschke says he was filled with joy when 2012 proved to be an exceptional vintage.

“We experienced mild weather throughout the growing season, with a slow ripening period that delivered lower yields and intense fruit flavours, great colour, high natural acidity and beautiful, mature, fine tannins. From my experience, the greatest wines we have made have been from vintages like this.”

“Henschke Hill of Grace 2012 shiraz is a captivating expression of this extraordinary vintage. It has trademark alluring five spice, star anise and black peppercorn aromatics, with a palate of incredible length and purity wrapped by beautifully integrated layers of silky tannins and flavours that linger endlessly.”

Henschke Hill of Grace is the most celebrated of the wines hand-made by Stephen and Prue Henschke. Meticulous care and attention to detail are lavished at every stage in crafting this wine, from the well-trained team who nurture the ancient vineyard with organic and biodynamic principles, to the age-old open-top fermentation techniques used in the winery. As custodians of the Hill of Grace, Stephen and his viticulturist wife Prue feel a deep responsibility to protect the quality and standing of their iconic Australian shiraz.

More than just a wine, this shiraz from ancestral vines is history in the bottle. It is a reflection of the perseverance and courage of generations past; of 157 year old pre-phylloxera vines, believed to originate from material brought out by the early settlers to South Australia, that survived the Centennial and Federation droughts; and of the cultural journey that can be mapped from the first bottling in 1958 by Stephen’s father Cyril to now.

Every vintage from the revered single-vineyard Hill of Grace is a limited release, but some are more limited than others. Just one barrel was produced in 2003 with extremely tiny vintages for 2013 and 2014. There was no Henschke Hill of Grace made in 1960, 1974, 2000 and 2011.

Henschke Hill of Grace 2012 will be available through fine wine retailers, restaurants and the Henschke website and cellar door from 1 May 2017.
