Adelaide remembers the King of Pop

candlesAdelaide fans, young and old braved a bitterly cold morning to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their idol, the king of pop, Michael Jackson. They came together on the beach at Glenelg at around 7am for ‘World Cry Day’, an event that encourages fans from around the world to gather at the exact time of Jackson’s death and share their grief and keep his spirit alive.

It was a sombre ceremony that began with speeches from fans including a girl who broke down in tears as she explained that it was her eighteenth birthday and she was so happy to spend it here with other Michael Jackson fans. There were tears shed by many as they shared memories of concerts, songs and all the ways that Jackson’s music has inspired them to help others.

Between speeches fans sung songs together and lit candles that were waved in hands or placed around posters of Jackson. It was, in many ways, an unusual sight to behold at such an early hour on the Glenelg foreshore but the fans didn’t seem to mind as they openly spoke of their love for the King of Pop for all to hear.  One fan was even dressed in the famous red outfit from the ‘Thriller’ clip and many more wore Michael’s signature white glove.

After the singing and speeches, the group moved down to the beach and threw roses into the ocean and blew bubbles into the air. This seemed to lift the mood of the occasion and as they moved back to the makeshift shrine there were smiles, dancing and lively conversation about their fallen idol. As the music shifted from Jackson’s signature ballads to his more danceable material, it was clear that these fans were not just here to mourn, but also to celebrate their love for Michael Jackson and his music.
