4 Of The Best South Australian Getaways For Summer

Hit the road and check out some of South Australia’s hottest destinations for some R&R.

It’s that crazy time of year, where the Christmas parties begin, school is almost over for the year and everyone is rushing around buying gifts and trying to beat the Christmas rush. In all of the madness, it’s easy to forget about planning a mini getaway and making the most of some beautiful weather and holiday time. Lucky for us, we live in a truly unique state with plenty of options close to home that offer a sense of serenity, awesome wildlife and breathtaking sites and views.

We sat down with our friends at Peregrine Travel Centre SA and found out about their favourite short trips you can embark on in our very own backyard.

Kangaroo Island

It’s only just across the way, but when you step out onto Kangaroo Island you will feel like you’re in another world. Pristine beaches and coastline surround this island filled with rugged bushland, native wildlife and a variety of amazing local produce to enjoy! Enjoy a short break exploring Kangaroo Island plus fit in the iconic destinations along the Great Ocean Road including, Remarkable Rocks, The Grampians, the Twelve Apostles and more on this 4 day Kangaroo Island and the Great Ocean Road adventure.

Eyre Peninsula

The Eyre Peninsula is one of the most beautiful coastal regions in Australia, and it just so happens to be a short flight (or a 7 hour drive) away from Adelaide! Port Lincoln, Port Neill, Mikkira Station and Coodlie Park and just some of the highlights worth visiting. We recommend taking the time to swim with dolphins or sea lions in Baird Bay and if you dare shark cage diving is definitely an experience you will never forget! Don’t forget to indulge in some delicious local produce in Port Lincoln – top of the list for seafood lovers are their famous oysters! Fit all of the highlights of the Eyre Peninsula in on this 6 day Eyre Peninsula Overland adventure.

Flinders Ranges National Park and Coober Pedy

The beautiful Flinders Ranges National Park is home to an array of wildlife, including the very adorable (and endangered) yellow-footed rock wallaby. You can grab your swag and take off on an epic road trip from Adelaide to the Red Centre, camping at the iconic Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges and staying in an underground bunkhouse in Coober Pedy. Experience Australian wildlife first hand, hike the fascinating landscapes and learn about Indigenous spiritual beliefs in Uluru on this 7 day Adelaide to Alice Springs Overland adventure.

The Great Australian Bight and the Nullarbor Plain

These two iconic Australian sites are not technically exclusive to South Australia, but we claim them! They are both easily accessible from Adelaide and a fantastic option for a short trip where you get to experience a variety of landscapes and Australian wildlife. The Nullarbor Plain is the longest, straightest and flattest road in Australia and your journey across it will combine the breathtaking coast of the Great Australian Bight and much more. This 10 day Adelaide to Perth overland adventure will take away all the planning and driving so all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the sites!

We know many South Aussies like to embark on these trips on their own, as a road trip or a long weekend away – however a group tour is great for those that want to fit everything in to a short time, would like all the fuss of transport and accommodation arrangements done for them and want the knowledge and experience of a local guide! Speak to the experienced consultants at Peregrine Travel Centre SA if you’d like to find out more about South Australian or Australian adventures.
