Langhorne Creek’s inaugural Wine Show results have shattered expectations, with 31 of the 198 regional wines judged taking out Gold Medals. The Follett family cemented their long-standing prestige with Lake Breeze Wines taking out Producer of the Year after collecting five of the eight trophies on offer at Friday’s Langhorne Creek Winemakers’ Luncheon.

Lake Breeze was awarded the Geek Pty Ltd Champion Wine of Show with their 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, and scored trophies for their 2012 Reserve Chardonnay (Best Sparkling Wine, White Wine or Rose); 2012 Winemakers’ Selection (Best Shiraz); and 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Best Museum or Fortified Wine).

Rounding out the awards were Metala Wines, whose 2012 Shiraz Cabernet was named Best Blended Red Wine; and Wolf Blass Wines, whose 2012 Gold Label Langhorne Creek Malbec took out Best Red or White from Alternative or Other Variety, and 2012 Black Label Cabernet Shiraz was badged Best Wine from a Multi-Regional Blend.

Speaking at the Langhorne Creek Winemakers’ 14th Annual Luncheon on Friday, chair of judges Nigel Dolan congratulated the Langhorne Creek Winemakers’ Committee, who have run an unofficial regional wine judging for more than a decade now, for taking the step forward to running an official wine show.

“The size and quality of this region certainly justifies having a wine show,” Dolan said.

“It was a pleasure to judge”.

“The standard of the blends and the shiraz was very strong, with four gold medals awarded in that class.”

In fact, the medals were aplenty across all classes, with 115 awarded to the 198 wines entered in the show.

“To have 16 per cent of the wines receive gold medal scores is outstanding,” Dolan said.

Langhorne Creek Winemakers’ Committee chair Ben Potts congratulated the region’s winemakers and said the results were a source of great pride for the region. The announcement capped off a stellar week for Langhorne Creek wines.

Bleasdale was celebrating a spectacular result in James Halliday’s annual Australian Wine Companion, receiving a near-perfect 98 points and a coveted five-star rating for its 2012 The Powder Monkey Single Vineyard Langhorne Creek Shiraz.
