2KW To Showcase A New Take On Winter Flavours

Adelaide’s 2KW are set to showcase some surprising flavour combinations for the cooler season on their new cocktail and restaurant menus.

2KW really don’t like to play fair. Just as Adelaide is preparing for a host of heavy winter menus, they’ve gone and completely reimagined what a menu for cooler weather should be. How are we supposed to know it’s winter without thick sauces lathered upon mounds of meat?

But this isn’t some bizarre form of culinary heresy. After some careful preparations, the restaurant menu will begin by offering six new small to medium dishes from today, with their winter mains to take their place on the menu during the coming fortnight.

Rather than overcomplicate their offerings, the chefs have chosen to pair back any excessively rich flavours that would usually help us all add an extra winter layer. Local and seasonal ingredients are the key to these creations with the proteins on offer being a Trio of Duck and a lightly seasoned roast Calamari with spicy chimichurri kick. A refreshing surprise is a winter salad of roasted vegetables and grains which showcases the inventive and playful approach of the 2KW kitchen in devising this menu. The Mushroom Patch retains bold and familiar flavours enhanced by porcini, but is cleanly cut through by purple basil and a carrot marmalade accompaniment.

Super Salad - 2KW Winter Menu

Super Salad of flowering broccolini, roasted cauliflower and brussel sprouts, kale, grains, seeds, cauliflower tahini

This ethos extends to the drinks menu as well, with four new cocktails available to those who have come for a view of the bar staff (or the cityscape). Rather than knock you about with heavy whiskeys or bourbons, these concoctions are more subtle, with a focus upon candied citrus, dark chocolates and roasted nut flavours. Some more fun has been had by the staff with a nod to the city landscape in the Plane Tree; a balanced combination of sherry, orange and chestnut. The Barrel Aged Rosita uses tequila and vermouth for punch, which proves softer than more familiar amber alternatives. The Coconut Old Fashioned and something we’ll affectionately call the Apple Pie are plays on more traditional blends of liquor, but especially worthy of note is the incredible scent of coconut which fills the glass of the former. The sweet roasted nut notes draw your whole nose into the glass, like a good red wine or a bunch of perfumed flowers.

Mushrooms - 2KW Winter Menu

Undaunted to challenge the paradigm of the season, 2KW will set themselves apart with Adelaide diners by choosing this direction.
