20th Century Graduates beat nine other SA bands to take out NOVA’s SA Heaps Good Bands competition last night with a tight, melodic and refreshingly optimistic performance.
The band made the packed crowd at Jive Bar on Hindley Street forget the cold winter weather for half an hour with their brand of summery, feel-good Indie pop.
The night started out with a glittering performance by The House Inspectors who got the crowd pumping with their disco –funk dance tunes. Led by DJ’s Luke & Dan, The House Inspectors showed why they are making a big impression on the world house scene.
Mash up king Rad Bad got the crowd on their feet between each performance with a smart and extremely dancable mash up set that included everything from Nirvana to Lady GaGa.
The Touch, who were winners of Nova’s ‘I Am with the Band’ competition closed the night with their high octane dance-rock. Front man Josh Moore was every bit the rock star as he came down from the stage and danced and sang with the crowd, even showing off his break dancing skills at one point.
But in the end, the night belonged to the youngest band there, the 20th Century Graduates who impressed all in attendance with their purely joyous and pitch-perfect performance. As the announcement came that they were the winners of the $5000 music grant from Coopers and Nova, the crowd’s reaction said it all.
